A Community Partnership between the College of Surgeons, Singapore and Operation Smile Singapore – 2009
A Memorandum of Agreement was signed between the College of Surgeons, Singapore ("College") and Operation Smile Singapore ("Operation Smile") on 14 April 2009 to ignite another milestone for the College as well as being another credible partner under the supporting framework of the Operation Smile.
Operation Smile is a voluntary organization dedicated to providing direct treatment to children with cleft lips and cleft palates while simultaneously providing education to promote multi-disciplinary care, treatment, prevention, nutrition and research. Its objective is to support Asian countries through partnership medical missions, training programmes and knowledge sharing. Operation Smile Singapore is part of the Operation Smile network and operates as a principal resource centre in Asia and the Operation Smile network has provided such free treatment to over 120,000 children around the world in the last 26 years.
In an effort of Operation Smile to provide surgical treatment to children suffering from facial deformities in Asian countries and in the mission of the College to contribute and dedicate itself in community work, it is a perfect match on this partnership for the College of Surgeons, a body of surgical specialists that looks after the academic and professional developments of surgeons and surgical trainees, to collaborate with Operation Smile to provide surgical and post-surgical care to beneficiaries, i.e. the children. The College will also contribute its expertise and knowledge to conduct, organize or participate in the continuing medical education of medical professionals from Asian countries who possess a lower expertise.
The College wish that this community partnership will bring about greater benefits to both the beneficiaries and the surgical fraternity. A perfect smile from the children is a perfect mile for the College.
